FXPansion BFD
This is what is commonly known as a rompler. It has a load of high quality samples in a big file, which can be accessed by your sequencer package. It has a pattern library if you run out of ideas and a very flexible and intuitive interface.
You can read full reviews elsewhere, but it has all kinds of gadgetry, like positioning of virtual microphones, humanisation functions, ambience settings, plus people are writing more and more patterns. If you don't like the disk streamed sounds, then you can use the patterns to play other sounds if you want, because they are just standard midi files.
It comes as a VSTi or a DXi, but there are certain limitations on the DXi. The drum kits are all configurable, you have lots of slots and you can put pretty much anything into any slot. Yes, you can have a kick drum in a hi-hat slot if you want.
There were some early version teething troubles, but it is now up to version 1.5 and is functioning pretty nicely. It also comes with a plug-in that allows you to play DFHS with it, in case you like the sounds there better, but you like the BFD interface more, which is really quite accommodating of FXPansion I think. Highly recommended.
